If your Calgary home was built between 1978 and 1998, there’s a good chance it has polybutylene (Poly-B) plumbing. Here’s what you need to know and why replacement should be on your radar.
What Is Poly-B?
Polybutylene is a gray plastic pipe that was widely used in Canadian home construction. It was cheaper than copper and easy to install, making it the go-to choice for decades. Unfortunately, it has a critical flaw.
Why Poly-B Fails
Poly-B degrades from the inside when exposed to chlorine in municipal water (which Calgary’s water contains). Over time, the pipe becomes brittle, develops micro-fractures, and eventually bursts — often without warning. Failures typically happen at fittings and connections first.
Insurance Implications
Many insurance companies in Calgary are increasing premiums or requiring Poly-B replacement as a condition of coverage. Some won’t insure homes with Poly-B at all. Replacing your pipes proactively can save you from insurance complications when you need coverage most.
The Replacement Process
We replace Poly-B with modern PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) piping, which is durable, flexible, and resistant to chlorine degradation. A typical whole-home replacement takes 1–2 days depending on your home’s size and layout.
Cost and Next Steps
Full Poly-B replacement typically costs ,000–,000 depending on home size. We provide written documentation for your insurance company. Call MV Pro Mechanical at 403-890-8685 for a free assessment.
